Benefit PoreFessional Matte Rescue Primer Review

The Benefit Porefessional Matte Rescue Primer retails for R495 in South Africa and can be bought online from Superbalist.

Let's talk packaging.

You've just got to love Benefit's fun and playful packaging in general. The Benefit Porefessional Matte Rescue is no different to the rest of their packaging. The primer comes silver tube with a picture of a woman on it. It comes in 2 sizes; a 50ml and a 15ml. I have the 15ml mini travel sized tube that is perfect for my travel makeup kit.

Let's talk marketing tactics.

Why Benefit loves it?

Let's talk formula and promises.

Matte rescue instantly minimises pore appearance. The lightweight, water-based gel overpowers shine and absorbs excess surface oil, leaving a natural-looking matte finish. Skin feels smooth and refreshed. Contains diamond powder known for its soft-focus pore-blurring effect.

  • 92% said it mattifies shine instantly
  • 92% said skin feels clean, refreshed
  • 89% said it absorbs excess surface oil instantly

So did it deliver?

To be honest, I think my review for this primer is very mixed. It definitely mattified my skin and left it feeling refreshed but did nothing for my pores. The water-based gel primer contains diamond powders known for it's soft-focus pore-blurring effects but unfortunately I did not notice a difference in my pores on the left and right side of my face when testing the product.

On the left is my skin after applying the primer to my skin. Right is my skin without the primer.
Left is my skin with primer after my applying foundation with a beauty blender. Right is my skin without primer after applying foundation with a beauty blender.

The verdict.

Primer balled up after using a brush to blend in foundation.

I am still up in two minds about whether or not I love the primer. The primer doesn't work well with all makeup products or applications thereof. I found that applying my foundation over the primer with a beauty blender was much easier than with a brush. The primer balled up as if being swiped away by the brush, so using a brush with the primer is a no go. Because I love applying my foundation with both a brush and beauty blender I want a primer that works well with both application tools.

I really enjoyed the formula when I worked out the right way to apply product over the primer. My skin stays matte for a longer period during the day, and when applied with a beauty blender, my foundation applies smoother.

Hey Rochelle! Thanks for commenting. I have to agree with you. One of it’s selling points is it’s pore minimising abilities so it’s disappointing that I didn’t get that from this product. Cool blog by the way. Gave you a follow on Insta. 🙂

Hey Emily! I’ve heard great things about the original PoreFessional and I hoped that this one would live up to the same hype. It is a pity that it didn’t live up to my expectations but I do hope that it works for others.
