5 Reasons I Switched to Shampoo Bars

Toiletry plastics are by far one of the biggest contributors to overflowing landfills and the sad part is that most of them are not even recyclable. Where I can make a difference, I try to do so. Shampoo bars have been a simple change in my life and it’s a step in the right direction living a greener and more ethically conscious life.

Shampoo bars are growing in popularity for many great reasons. Apart from leaving my hair feeling luscious and squeaky clean, here are 5 reasons I have made the switch to shampoo bars.

1. They have minimal to zero wasted packaging

Depending on where you get your shampoo bar from, you have the option of purchasing a bar online where it may come in recyclable packaging but you also have the option of heading to a store and purchasing a bar package-free.

I purchase my shampoo bars online from Be.Bare, a local South African, eco-conscious brand. Their bars come wrapped in paper and a recyclable box making them 100% plastic-free.

2. They are toxin free and nourishing for your hair

Many shampoo formulas contain a ton of chemicals and ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, while most shampoo bars are natural. Shampoo bars are SLS and paraben-free. Their non-irritating & nurturing formula’s make them perfect to use when you’re in a sticky situation and need to use the bar to wash the rest of your body.

3. Shampoo bars are multi-functional

I have already mentioned that a shampoo bar can be multi-functional and be used to wash the rest of your body. The conditioner bars are the perfect replacement for shaving creams. I have long thrown out the old shaving gel can and replaced it with my conditioner bar – 2 benefits for the price of 1 – and my skin is never irritated after a shave.

4. They last longer than bottled shampoo

If the shampoo bar is sorted correctly after it’s used, you can get more washes from a shampoo bar than you can from their bottled counterparts. Shampoo bars don’t contain any liquid and are therefore more concentrated. This means that you need to use less to get the same wash.

Shampoo bars will last longer and work better when they are allowed to dry between washes. Store your bars on a soap dish that has draining holes to allow the bar to dry properly. I store my shampoo and conditioner bars on a bamboo soap dish that allows it to dry after I have used it.

5. Shampoo Bars travel well

Shampoo bars are great to travel with because you don’t have to worry about spillage or liquid restrictions on an aircraft. Shampoo bars are TSA approved and can be taken in your carry on on your next flight.

My shampoo and conditioner bar is my favourite toiletry item to travel with. It is convenient, light-weight and takes up much less space than shampoo bottles (yes, they are even smaller than travel size bottles).

Bonus reason: Shampoo bars showcase minimalism

This is not the main reason that you should be investing in a shampoo bar but it’s definitely a reason worth sharing. Shampoo bars help create a real minimalist aesthetic in your bathroom by reducing the number of bottles in the shower. Less clutter also means less to clean – yey!
