10 Skincare Mistakes That are Damaging Your Skin

What if your everyday skincare routine is only damaging your skin further? How will you know what you are doing wrong or how to fix it?

The simple answer is that we don’t actually know what we are doing wrong, and there are very few people willing to tell you how to treat your skin with the utmost of care. So sit down, grab a pen and paper, prepare to clean out your bathroom cupboard, and brace yourself for just 10 of the many things that could be negatively impacting your skincare routine!

  1. Over Exfoliating: it is tempting but highly damaging in the long run to buff off the top layer of your skin. You are actually removing the skins own protective lipid bilayer, which will leave your skin vulnerable to environmental toxin exposure like the sun, and this can cause premature ageing.
  2. Exfoliating away oily skin: This, unfortunately, is not possible. The more you scrub, the worse you will make your situation. The reason your skin is oily in the first place is because your lipid bilayer has been compromised from your constant scrubbing. Your skin is basically sent into protective overdrive when you remove the oil. There is an osmotic balance that your skin will always attempt to adhear to. You need to give your skin what it is showing you that it needs.
  3. Climbing into bed with make up on: this is something that happens more often than it should. Ladies, we get home from a night out with the girls and just hop into bed. Sure, you’re young and it hasn’t had any bad side effects yet, but just you wait. Make up that is left on your skin overnight can clog your pores and oil glands, and as you get older and your collagen levels decline, the pore becomes impacted with make up and it will stretch and not snap back as easily as what it did when you were younger. Its best to snap out of this habit early. I for one, remove my make up every night before my bath.
  4. Picking spots: Do. Not. Do. This – even as tempting as it may be. Anytime that you pick at your spots, you will cause inflammation  and damage to the skin. This will lead to scarring and ageing, as well as aid the bacteria in the spot spread across the skin and cause more spots. One of the main reasons for spots on your skin, other than bacteria, is inflammation. So the more you pick at them and irritate them, the worse your situation will be. STOP IT!
  5. Not cleansing properly: Maybe you are diligent about removing your make up like I am, but are you using the correct cleanser to put your skin in the optimal condition in order to allow your skin to renew overnight? Look for products that have the right ingredients for your skin. It’s often best to go and have your skin analysed by a professional so that you know which products are best for your skin condition and state. A good place to start is a morning cream that contains anti-oxidants, and a retinol cream for the evenings to help with cell turnover and dermal cleaning.
  6. Not apply the products in the correct order: one of the keys to getting the best out of your skin care regime is to make sure that you apply products with thinner consistencies before those with thicker consistencies. Thicker products can sometimes block products with thinner consistencies from penetrating into the skin and the skin already has a limited absorption rate.
  7. Not wearing SPF everyday: Sun Block is not just for the beach or for sun bathing. SPF should be your first approach to preventing any forms of ageing before they happen – as most of your ageing comes from sun damage. You need to go for one that is equal to or higher than SPF 30 and also look for one that is broad spectrum because this one will help you with protection from UVA & UVB rays. Many of us ladies suffer with a darkening of the skin on the décolleté, and this comes from not apply SPF as far down as this area. So make sure that you apply cream as far down as that to avoid disappointment later.
  8. Drying out your skin: We all get break outs but those that suffer from acne, or even those that get the occasional spot, seem to think that they need to dry their skin out because they mistake the oils for being the main cause for the actual breakouts. This is in fact, not true, the reasons for the oily appearing skin is because the products that you are using are too harsh for your skin. Like I have mentioned before, you are hurting your lipid bilayer by using products that are too harsh for your skin. You need to make sure that you are using the correct products for your main skin concern.
  9. Not moisturising an oily skin: On the other end of the spectrum, those that think that they have an oily skin will refuse to put more cream on, and this causes the oily skin to become worse. Your skin works on an osmosis system and it will try and balance out what the skin needs. In other words – if you apply moisturiser, your skin will stop overcompensating for the loss of hydration (with more oil) caused by not applying moisturiser.
  10. Know what your are putting on your skin: This is very important, and some of us seem to take the information that is given to us by professionals for granted. All therapists will give you the information that they want you to know, but educate yourself as well. Read up on the products and some of the ingredients that you might need for your skin condition and take this information with you when you consult your therapist. Do not be afraid to ask the therapist more questions – a good therapist will be able to answer almost every single question you throw at them.

A few things that I hope you have learned from the above is that your skin is actually telling you what is wrong with it – so start listening. If it is oily, it needs more oil for goodness sakes. Make sure you know your skin, and make sure that you know what products you need for your skin. Seek professional advice constantly, your skin’s needs change constantly and you will need to keep on top of this for your ultimate skin.
