If you are new to my blog then you won’t know that for the past 3 years I have been on a mission to clear out beauty products from my bathroom cupboard. I realise that 3 years is a very long time, but I have a ton of products in my cupboard that need to be used. I also tend to receive a lot of products as gifts from friends and family, so just when I think I am making good progress a birthday comes around and more goes into the cupboard. 🙂
In my clearing out process, I donate what I receive as gifts that I know I will not use because there is someone out there that will appreciate it more than I may. I toss what expires if I am not able to finish it in time, and I finish products that are still within their expiry date.
So here are at least 19 products that I finished this year. I will tell you what I loved or perhaps didn’t fancy, and if I repurchased or if I phased them out of my routine and why.
Grab yourself a cup of coffee and lets enjoy my empties for 2019 together.
First, let’s talk about facial cleansers. This year, I finished 2 bottles of the Eucerin Dermo Purifyer Oil Control Cleansers (1). I started this year with both of these bottles only being half full, I kept one in my shower and one by my basin so that I didn’t have to move a single bottle between the shower and basin morning and evening. It’s scary to think that it took me so long to use up even one of the bottles that there was even a package update in between buying and finishing the cleansers.
I really enjoyed this facial cleanser but I found that my skin started getting used to it and became oily by the end of the day so I did not repurchase this when I finished them and decided to try and find a product that would help with oil control.
The second two products that I finished this past year fall within the age defying part of my facial routine. The Hey Gorgeous Vitamin C Age Defying Serum (2) and the Environ Firming Eye Gel (3).
Hey Gorgeous products are always a winner for me, and this serum is no different. I won this serum in a giveaway and immediately fell in love with it and the brand. It was one of the first products I used from Hey Gorgeous and now more than 75% of my skin care routine is Hey Gorgeous products. I love an eye cream. I never used to, but as I am getting older I am understanding the reason for an eye cream. The Environ Firming Eye Gel is my absolute favourite. I currently have another eye cream that I am trying to finish off because I don’t want to waste it, but once my current one is finished I have a new bottle of the Environ just waiting to be opened.
I did not realise how well I did on clearing out my facial creams until now – I think I might be obsessed with face creams. I love trying out new face creams and if I spot something in the shops that draws me in, I purchase it and swop it out for any product I am currently using. This is how I end up with a ton of moisturisers in my cupboard. So I think it’s incredible that I managed to use up and clear out five facial moisturisers this past year.
Here is a list of the 5 moisturisers I used up: Dr Organic Hemp Oil 24 Hour Rescue Cream (4) !FAVE! Di’Myoor Vitmain C Booster Moisturiser (5) Hey Gorgeous Vitamin C Moisturiser (6) Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance (7) Eucerin Dermo Purifyer Oil Control (8)
Just to put into perspective how much I like to hoard beauty and skin care products in my bathroom cupboard, only one of these moisturisers was actually bought new this year. The other four moisturisers have been sitting in my bathroom cupboard waiting for the day I picked them up again.

I moisturise daily, and to be honest, I would have expected to have gone through a lot more body lotion than I actually have. But nevertheless, here are two body lotions that I finished this year; Dove Nourishing Lotion with Shea Butter and Warm Vanilla(9) and the Body Shop Almond Milk Body Yoghurt (10). If I had to compare the two body lotions I would definitely have to say that the Body Shop Almond Milk Body Yoghurt was my favourite. It is a lightweight and fast absorbing body lotion for people on the move.
The Dove Nourishing Lotion, while great, was just an everyday affordable body lotion and I think I fancied the Body Yoghurt more as it felt more premium. I have not actually bought any new body lotions as I have around three or four more body lotions to clear out of my bathroom cupboard.
This picture pretty much sums up my daily makeup products. As much as I love applying makeup, during the week I keep it simple for work. I work in a digital marketing tech agency with a super relaxed environment and there is no need for me to apply a lot of makeup on a daily basis. My priorities are, in this order, my eyebrows, eyelashes, and to conceal spots.
Here is a list of the beauty empties in my basket: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (11) Rimmel Exaggerate Pencil (12) Catrice Prime and Fine Smoothing Refiner(13) Catrice Camouflage Concealer (14) Essence Eyebrow Gels (15)
Next in my basket of empties is the Tresemme Botanique Shampoo and Conditioner (16). In terms of fragrance, this is by far my favourite from Tresemme. I used to love the scent that Tresemme is well-known for, and I still do, but this scent was a welcomed change. Whenever I bought shampoo or conditioner, I used to by the biggest bottles because I really dislike heading to the drugstore to buy shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis, so the bigger the bottle the better. This also means that it takes me forever to finish the product.
I used to love Tresemme hair products but recently I have been left with a lot of product build up on my hair so I went in search for a new shampoo and conditioner. Keeping in mind that I am on a minimal journey, I have opted for the Lush shampoo and conditioner bars so this may be the last time I feature shampoo and conditioner bottles in an empties post.
Farewell shampoo and conditioner bottles.
This is one product that will always be in my bathroom cupboard, and therefore in an empties post. Hair detangling spray is something that I just cannot live without. I have curly hair that on a good day gets incredibly knotty, now add on top of that the fact that I live in windy Cape Town, my hair can become a hot mess.
Because I wear my hair curly (more often than straight), I don’t often brush it between washes so by the time it comes time to washing my hair, it is super knotty. After a shower, I always spray a bit of hair detangler onto my damp hair and it makes the world of difference when I brush it out. I love the Organics Kids Hair Detangling Spray (17), and I have been using it for around five years. I know that there are probably other hair detanglers out there that are not aimed at kids but I love this one and haven’t actually felt the need to find a different one. Also, who doesn’t love a cool octopus on their hair detangling bottle?
Do you use detangler and which one do you use? Can you recommend any to me?
Another staple in my beauty basket is dry shampoo. I don’t only use dry shampoo to hide second or third day oils, but I also use it to give my hair volume so I probably end up using dry shampoo every day. I can easily go through a can of dry shampoo in a month or two so it makes sense that by the end of the year I have five empty cans.
My two favourite brands are Girlz Only Dry Shampoo for Blondes and Batiste Dry Shampoo Cherry (18).
The last empty in my beauty basket is the Aloe Unique Hand and Nail Cream (19). Now I didn’t buy this product, this hand cream has travelled the world. It was bought in South Africa, and journeyed to it’s new home in the United Kingdom. I borrowed it from it’s owner while on holiday in the UK and it ended up in my handbag and travelled home with me to South Africa.
It’s a great hand cream!
